Australian opener Shane Watson out to the first ball of the innings against the West Indies on Saturday in the ICC Champions Trophy match at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. This was the 94th instance in 2897 ODI matches in history.
This is the 8th instance when an Australian batsman out on the first ball of the innings, interestingly Adam Gilchrist was out for FOUR times of these 8 instances.
But this is the only 2nd time that the West Indian bowler able to get the wicket of Australian opener off the first ball. In 1984-85 Graeme Wood was out on the first ball against West Indies.
Sanath Jayasuriya and Adam Gilchrist are the only two batsmen who lost their wicket to the first ball of a team innings for FOUR times.
24 of the 94 batsmen were bowled, like Shane Watson, on the first ball. There are 45 batsmen out CAUGHT while 22 have lost there wicket by being leg before wicket. However Zimbabwe’s Matsikenyeri and Canada’s Mohammad Iqbal were run out on the first ball of their team innings.
In all this was the 16 instance when a batsman lost his wicket on first ball against West Indies. 11 times each it has happened against New Zealand and Pakistan.
